If you are on Instagram, I know you have had an experience with the dreaded DM spammer. “Click here to sign up for my team!”, “Tired of those bags under your eyes?”, or “Join me and sign up for my weight loss products!”.
I know that as a mom of 2 young kids, I may look as though I need all of those things but, honestly, those out of the blue messages really rub me the wrong way. Have I got you wondering how to use Instagram for your direct sales business?
Follow these three tips to turn your Instagram spammers into customers.
For those who are unfamiliar with Instagram’s platform, Instagram has a messaging feature. You can send and receive direct messages (DM’s), much like Facebook Messenger.
Take a look at your homepage in the upper right-hand corner. See the little inbox icon? That is where those messages go.
When I began receiving quite a few of these unsolicited spammy messages, I began to wonder. Could I make light of the situation and turn these spammers messages into Instagram sales?
And what do you know, I succeeded!
Do not respond negatively or snarky
It may be your first reaction. Heck, it is ALWAYS my first reaction, but reply with wording such as, “Hi there, I appreciate your offer for XYZ, I am passionate about supporting other small business owners. I am one myself and am with insert your company here.
See what I did there? Reply with a positive tone and it catches the spammer off guard.
They are used to either no replies or negative ones. You have caught their attention right away with a pleasant response! Also, it shows you are supportive of their business and you have given them a tiny piece of information about the business you are in.
Keep the conversation going
With the sales I made from the DM spammers on Instagram, I found a way to craft the conversation to show how my direct sales business product would benefit them. With my direct sales product, the living lockets showcase charms to tell a story.
I then shared how the person’s company could be featured in a locket. What a great way to stand out amongst other consultants at their upcoming convention!
A few more messages back and forth with photos of potential lockets and the Instagram sale was made!
Don’t give up
In direct sales, it is all about the relationships you make and the value you provide. I cannot promise every spammer you get a direct message from is going to be a repeat customer but, it may open the door up for future conversations and future relationships for you and your business. Keep a conversation going with that person who sent the original Instagram message and who knows where it will lead!
By following these 3 key tips, I converted 4 Instagram DM spammers into customers.
